What is a car fuse
  • The commonly used fuses in automobiles include high current fuses and medium low current fuses, with medium low current fuses being more easily accessible. Low and medium current fuses can be roughly divided into sheet type fuses (including automatic fuse box mini fuses), plug-in fuses, screw on fuses, and tube type fuse box flat type fuses. Among them, we can come into contact with medium size ATO or small size fast melting sheet type fuses. Chip fuses can carry small currents and short pulse currents, such as headlight circuits and rear windshield defrosting.

The international standards for the color of automotive chip fuses include 2A gray, 3A purple, 4A pink, 5A orange, 7.5A coffee, 10A red, 15A blue, 20A yellow, 25A transparent colorless, 30A green, and 40A deep orange. According to the different colors, it is possible to clearly distinguish the size of different amperals.

The conductors inside the chip fuse are made of metal similar to solder, which has a lower melting point than ordinary wires themselves. The size of the conductor needs to be calibrated very accurately so that when the rated current is reached, enough heat can be generated to fuse the conductor and disconnect the circuit. Fuses have two important operating parameters, one is the operating voltage, and the other is the rated current. When purchasing or replacing them, car owners should choose based on the voltage and current in the circuit.

  • Types of Automotive Fuses

To identify the type of fuse used in the vehicle, it may be necessary to check the fuse box located in the vehicle. However, certain types of fuses are universal for certain vehicles, and the following are the most common types of fuses in vehicles.

    Blade type fuse

If it is a car manufactured after 1986, it may contain blade type fuses that are easily identified by their plastic body and two metal pins. Although almost all gasoline powered vehicles use blade fuse types, they come in six different sizes with a rated current range from 1 ampere to 100 amperes.

  • Tutorial on Replacing Automotive Fuses

If any electrical equipment does not work during the use of a car, it may be caused by a blown fuse and needs to be replaced in a timely manner.

The method is to first turn off the ignition switch and open the fuse box cover. Then replace the fuse.

    Matters needing attention:

Replace the fuse according to the rated current value indicated on the fuse box cover, and do not use a fuse with a higher rated current.

If the new fuse immediately blows again, it indicates that there may be a malfunction in the circuit system and should be repaired as soon as possible.

In the absence of spare fuses, fuses on other devices that do not affect driving and safety can be replaced in emergency situations.

If a fuse with the same current load cannot be found, a lower rated current than the original fuse can be used as a substitute.
