Buzzers: Piezo and Magnetic buzzers
Buzzers, The sounding element can emit sound by applying DC voltage (active buzzer) or square wave (passive buzzer) at its two ends. Its main parameters are overall dimensions, sound direction, operating voltage, operating frequency, operating current, driving mode (DC/square wave), etc. These can be selected according to needs.In today’s article, we will be talking about buzzers!
We will be focusing on two types of buzzers: Piezo buzzer and magnetic buzzers since they’re more common as compared to the rest. With that said, let’s look at what will be covered:
Overview of Buzzers
The buzzer is an electronic buzzer with an integrated structure, which is powered by DC voltage and is widely used in computers, printers, copiers, alarms, electronic toys, automotive electronic equipment, telephones, timers and other electronic products as a sound device. Classification of BUZZER buzzer:
1.According to the principle of its drive mode, it can be divided into: active buzzer (including drive circuit, also called self-excited buzzer) and passive buzzer (external drive, also called separately excited buzzer);
2. According to the different structure, it can be divided into: electromagnetic buzzer and piezoelectric buzzer;
3.According to different packages, it can be divided into DIP BUZZER (pin buzzer) and SMD BUZZER (chip buzzer);
4.According to the difference of current, it can be divided into DC buzzer and AC buzzer. Among them, the DC piezoelectric buzzer is the most common, which uses piezoelectric materials, that is, when the piezoelectric materials are deformed due to external forces, the piezoelectric materials will generate charges. Similarly, piezoelectric materials will deform when energized.Transducers and Indicators
Active buzzer and passive buzzer
To judge the active buzzer and passive buzzer, you can also use the multimeter resistance gear Rxl to test: connect the black probe to the buzzer "-" pin, and touch the red probe back and forth on the other pin. If the passive buzzer triggers a click or a click, and the resistance is only 8 Ω (or 16 Ω); If it can make continuous sound and the resistance is more than a few hundred ohms, it is an active buzzer.
The active buzzer can emit sound continuously when it is directly connected to the rated power supply (new buzzers are indicated on the label); The passive buzzer, like the electromagnetic speaker, can only sound when it is connected to the audio output circuit.
Difference between active buzzer and passive buzzer
Note: The "source" here does not refer to the power source, but refers to the shock source.
That is to say, the active buzzer is internally provided with a shock source, so it will sound as soon as the power is turned on;
There is no shock source inside the passive device, so it cannot be made to sing by DC signal. It must be driven by 2K-5K square wave;
The active buzzer is often more expensive than the passive buzzer because there are multiple oscillation circuits inside.
The advantages of passive buzzer are
1. Cheap
2. The sound frequency can be controlled, and the effect of "Dorami Fasolasi" can be achieved
3. In some special cases, a control interface can be reused with LED
The advantages of the active buzzer are: convenient program controlMechanical Buzzer PDF
Working Principle of the buzzers
Now that we've had a better look at Piezo and magnetic buzzers' structures, we can move on to how they actually work:
Due to the piezoelectric material, when an AC is passed through it, it'll shrink and expand. This would then cause a vibration which would produce sound waves as you can see from the diagram.
Applications of Buzzers
There are also some differences in specific applications. For example, electromagnetic buzzers are like washing machines, while
piezoelectric buzzers are used for doorbells and electronic clocks. However, there are still many products that use buzzers in our daily life, which can be seen almost everywhere (buzzer products are the ones that give prompts or alarm sounds), such as telephones, walkie talkies, buttons on induction cookers, and the sounds made at the beginning and end of the operation of washing machines; For example, if you see an alarm on the wall of a company or a bank, and it sounds loud and harsh, it is the buzzer used for the alarm. The buzzer is like a horn. Without it, the horn will not sound. In fact, the buzzer is also a component of the horn. Buzzer automobile field: door open prompt tone, seat belt unfastened prompt tone, reversing prompt tone, GPS key tone, entertainment audio; Home appliance applications: refrigerator, washing machine, coffee machine, microwave oven, etc; Digital product application: digital camera, notebook computer, recording pen prompt tone; Instrument application: LCR tester, multimeter prompt tone;Projects with Buzzers

Mechanical design buzzer belongs to a special subclass of electromagnetic buzzer, which is composed of oscillator, electromagnetic coil, magnet and shell. Different from the traditional electromagnetic control buzzer, the vibration plate of mechanical design buzzer is embedded in the shell, and its frequency analysis is generally low, about 0.5 kHz. The frequency range of ordinary building electromagnetic buzzer is about 2 kHz. After the power supply (as small as 1.2VDC/1.5VDC/3.0VDC, as large as 110VAC, 220VAC) is connected, the sound is generated by regularly knocking the vibration film on the shell under the interaction of the solenoid coil and the magnet. Mechanical buzzer is mainly used for warning and sounding of electrical products (such as egg furnace zl-ydy2317-005220w, soybean milk machine, etc.). Not only because the frequency emission is 0.5K HZ, the entire vibrating buzzer can be transmitted to the ground through the mouse as a driving mouse, but also as the main part of driving the mouse. Today's mechanical buzzers are usually very active. Connected to the DC power supply, the audio buzzer active mechanical oscillation circuit can send a clear sense of "da, da, DA -," sound and vibration.
FBelec is committed to the development and production of piezoelectric buzzer, electromagnetic buzzer, SMD chip buzzer. It is a professional active buzzer and passive buzzer manufacturer whose products are widely used in: air conditioners, telephones, pagers, copiers, alarm reports, instruments and meters, UPS power supply, motorcycle steering gear, electronic toys, computer terminals, electronic meters, etc.
Key Specifications
1. Size: The size of the buzzer will affect the volume and frequency. The minimum size of the electromagnetic buzzer ranges from 7 mm to 25 mm, and the maximum size of the piezoelectric buzzer ranges from 12 mm to 50 mm or more.
2. Working voltage: electromagnetic buzzer, from 1.5 to 24V, and piezoelectric buzzer, from 3V to 220V are both feasible, but generally piezoelectric buzzer is recommended to have a voltage of more than 9V to obtain a loud sound.
3. Current consumption: depending on the voltage, the electromagnetic type can be from tens to hundreds of milliamperes. The piezoelectric type can save more power. A few milliamperes can operate normally, and when the buzzer starts, it needs to consume about three times of current instantly.
4. Drive mode: both types of buzzers have self excitation type. They can emit sound as long as DC is connected. Because the built-in drive circuit is in the buzzer, because of different action principles, the electromagnetic buzzer needs to be driven by 1/2 square wave, and the piezoelectric buzzer needs square wave to have better sound output.
5. Sound pressure: The buzzer usually uses a distance of 10cm as the test standard. If the distance is doubled, it will attenuate by 6dB. If the distance is doubled, it will increase by 6dB. The electromagnetic buzzer can reach the level of 85dB/10cm. The piezoelectric buzzer can be made very loud. Most common alarms are made of piezoelectric buzzers.
6. Connection mode: generally, there are pin (DIP), wire (wire), SMD (SMD), and the way of locking screws for piezoelectric large ones.
